Oyo 2027: Makinde Downplays Religion in Succession Debate as Ibadan Chief Insists on Muslim Governor

Ajadi for Governor

Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has stirred fresh conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections after offering subtle remarks on the religious considerations surrounding his potential successor.

Hon. Wale AJani

Speaking during an address to intending Hajj pilgrims at the Olodo Hajj Camp in Ibadan, the governor emphasized that religion should not be the primary factor in determining who leads the state. He noted that from the 8th to the 10th Senate, individuals who represented Oyo State in the Senate have all been Muslims, underscoring that leadership should be judged by performance rather than religious affiliation.

Makinde urged the people of the state to prioritise competence, capacity, and the ability to deliver good governance over sectional or religious sentiments when choosing the next governor.

However, his position has sparked differing views among stakeholders. A prominent Ibadan chief, Mogaji Abbas Oloko, has argued that the next governor of the state should be a Muslim to ensure what he described as “proper balance” in the state’s political leadership.

Oloko maintained that religious considerations remain a sensitive issue in Oyo State’s political landscape and should not be overlooked in the succession process.
The differing perspectives highlight the growing debate over zoning, equity, and religious representation as political activities gradually build up toward the 2027 elections in Oyo State.
