Igbo Community in Ibadan Backs Makinde, Rejects Political Intrigues Threatening Oyo Stability
The Association of Igbo Residents in Ibadan has thrown its weight behind Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, condemning what it described as attempts by external political actors to destabilise the state.

Speaking at a press conference held on Saturday, the group, alongside its representatives from across the South-East, cautioned against actions and statements capable of disrupting the peace and steady development currently enjoyed in Oyo State.
The representatives, including John Idoko (Enugu), Ogochukwu Ogbonna (Ebonyi), Barrister Ndo Ofurenna (Imo), Ukachi Clement (Imo/Oyo), Valentine Chukwu (Anambra), and Kingsley Ike (Abia), expressed concern over recent political developments allegedly linked to former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose.

The group accused Fayose of making provocative statements and interfering in Oyo State affairs despite having no constitutional role in the state. They further alleged that his actions, alongside purported alliances with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, were aimed at creating unnecessary tension.
According to the association, dragging the revered Olubadan Stool into partisan politics is unacceptable and must be resisted by all well-meaning stakeholders.

“The Olubadan institution remains sacred and central to the identity of Ibadanland. It must not be politicised or used for personal ambition,” the group stated.
The association also criticised remarks allegedly made by Fayose during his recent visit to Ibadan, describing them as disrespectful to the office of the governor and capable of inciting political discord.
On governance, the group reaffirmed its confidence in Governor Makinde, citing his administration’s strides in infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and workers’ welfare.
They noted that Oyo State has continued to witness relative peace, religious harmony, and ethnic inclusiveness under Makinde’s leadership, making it conducive for residents, including the Igbo community.
The group also dismissed speculations surrounding any alleged impeachment plot against the governor, describing it as a distraction driven by political mischief.
They urged residents of the state to remain calm, vigilant, and focused on development, while calling on leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to caution members against inflammatory statements that could deepen internal divisions.
Reaffirming their support, the association stressed that Oyo State remains a peaceful and politically conscious environment where performance, not propaganda, determines public trust.
“Oyo State belongs to its people. No amount of external interference will derail the progress being made,” the group concluded.
