Obasa Ousted: Lagos Lawmakers Impeach Speaker Over Financial Infractions
Mudashiru Obasa, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has been impeached by lawmakers who accuse him of multiple statutory and financial infractions. The impeachment occurred on Monday, January 13, 2025, although details surrounding the decision are still emerging.
Obasa’s removal follows allegations of financial misconduct, breach of public trust, and abuse of office, including claims that he used proxy companies to embezzle funds from the Assembly. He was also accused of mismanaging N17 billion allocated for constructing a gate at the Assembly and awarding a N469 million contract to a company linked to his alleged fraudulent activities.
Following Obasa’s impeachment, his deputy, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has been elected as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Meranda represents Apapa Constituency 1 and previously served as the chief whip of the House.
