You Failed Oyo South, Now You’re Selling LG Autonomy”—Residents Fire Back at APC’s Sharafadeen Alli
Residents across the three senatorial districts of Oyo State have faulted the Senator representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, over his recent comments on Local Government autonomy, calling them part of what they described as the APC’s propaganda.
Residents from Oyo South, Oyo Central, and Oyo North Senatorial Districts alleged that the Senator has not justified his mandate in the 9 Local Government Areas that make up Oyo South, and warned voters to be wary of campaign promises built on Local Government autonomy.
One community leader from Ibadan South-West in Oyo South Senatorial District, which comprises Ibadan South-West, Ibadan South-East, Ibadan North-East, Ibarapa East, Ibarapa Central, Ibarapa North, Ido and Ibadan North-West, said the impact of Local Government Councils is more visible than that of the Senator.
According to him, “Sarafadeen Alli is a liar, you can’t deceive the whole state as you deceived Oyo South Senatorial District where the Local Government Council performed better than you as Senator who covered 9 Local Government Areas in Oyo South. What is his achievement?”
Another resident from Ibarapa zone added that the people have not felt any meaningful representation, stressing that the Local Government chairmen are closer to the grassroots.
A youth leader from Oyo town in Oyo Central Senatorial District, which covers Atiba, Afijio, Oyo East, Oyo West, Surulere, Ogo-Oluwa, Oluyole, Lagelu, Akinyele and Egbeda, challenged the APC to show proof of Local Government autonomy.
He stated that, “Show us one APC-controlled state that is truly practicing Local Government autonomy today. There is none! Any campaign built on LG autonomy is dead on arrival. President Tinubu is only deceiving Nigerians with that propaganda, and that is why we must vote against him and the APC.”
A trader from Ogbomoso in the same zone said the promise of autonomy has remained a political slogan with no implementation.
A farmer from Saki in Oyo North Senatorial District, comprising Saki West, Saki East, Atisbo, Iseyin, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola, Irepo, Olorunsogo, Orelope, Ogbomoso North, Ogbomoso South and Oriire, questioned the sincerity of the Federal Government.
He said, “After the Supreme Court judgment, they directed all 774 Local Government Councils in Nigeria to submit their account details to the Accountant General of the Federation for direct funding. Till today, not a single Local Government has been credited directly. It was all a scam. The whole thing is a deceit to Nigerians.”
Another resident from Iseyin said Oke-Ogun people are already wiser and will not fall for what he described as the APC lying machine.
The residents collectively warned voters in Oyo State and across Nigeria to critically assess the performance of the APC-led Federal Government and demand evidence of direct funding to Local Governments before believing any fresh promise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
