Backlash as Kunle Afolayan, Others Launch Tinubu Re-Election Support Group
Several Nigerians have taken to social media to criticise some Nollywood celebrities after they unveiled a new political support group backing the re-election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Among the actors facing backlash are Kunle Afolayan, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Ayo Adesanya and Remi Surutu.
The controversy followed the launch of a political group known as Eko 57 Movement, unveiled in Lagos on Sunday. The initiative is reportedly coordinated by Nollywood actor Lege Miami and is aimed at mobilising support for President Tinubu ahead of the next election cycle.
However, the development has sparked strong reactions online, with many Nigerians accusing the celebrities of ignoring the economic hardship and daily struggles faced by citizens.
A trending video from the event triggered a wave of criticism from netizens, who argued that public figures should be more sensitive to issues affecting ordinary Nigerians. Some commenters warned that the same celebrities should not seek public sympathy or financial support if they face personal challenges in the future.
Many critics also stressed that what Nigeria truly needs is reforms such as mandatory real-time transmission of election results, rather than political campaign groups.
Others highlighted issues including insecurity, poor electricity supply, corruption, rising fuel prices, and the high cost of living as pressing concerns they believe should be prioritised.
The online backlash continues to generate debate about the role of celebrities in Nigerian politics and public advocacy.
