Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has assured workers that his administration will soon implement the newly approved minimum wage. To make this happen, the state government will begin negotiations with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) next week. As a temporary measure, the state has extended the current wage award for another three months, giving both parties time to iron out the details.

It’s worth noting that Governor Makinde has a history of prioritizing workers’ welfare. During his Workers’ Day 2023 address, he highlighted his administration’s commitment to paying salaries on time, stating that the 25th of every month remained sacrosanct for salary payments ¹. He also mentioned that the state government had paid the minimum wage since January 2020, along with increments for backlogs of promotions and consequential adjustments.
