Oyo State Government Trains Local Government Information Officers
The two-day training facilitated by the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission in conjunction with Bowa Media Incorporated, for 35 local government information officers is titled: “Enhancing Communication Skills
Addressing the information officers, a communication scholar and practitioner, Sunday Saanu who was one of the guest speakers, challenged the information officers to upgrade their operations to a global scale with the advantages of information and communication technologies.
Saanu at the seminar asserted that with proficient use of ICTs, every local government area of the state could be given global visibility, urging the participants to come out of local orientation.
Saanu who garnished his presentation with various personal experiences tasked the participants to change their attitude towards their duties, insisting that they could carve a niche for themselves if they truly carry out their duties diligently with the needed zeal and professionalism.
The second speaker, an ace broadcaster, Alhaji Wale Rufia enlightened the need for public speaking enhancement towards complementing the duty of information officers.
Rufia said as information officers it is essential to have the basic skills for public speaking, the gift to be listened to and be understood.
In his lecture, the chairman, of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo state chapter, Comrade Ademola Babalola educate the participants on how government public information officers are responsible for creating enabling communication between a organization and both news media outlets and the public to have shared meaning or mutual understanding.
Babalola explained that an information officer must ensure that any press statement that will be made available to the press and the public must be accurate, and adhere to official policy or laws.
Part of what the participants also received lectures on include, Writing, Editing for publication, Press Releases Writing, Editorial Writing, Government Information Officer’s Relationship with Media Houses, Organizing Seminars, Organizing Conference, Crisis Information Management as well as Social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok for generating and dissemination of information.
Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of BOWA Media Incorporated, Mr. Wale Bodija thanked the Oyo State Local Government Service Commission for investing in the professional development of the Information Officers, training was in line with the Agenda of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to build the capacity of the State’s workforce across all tiers.
The participants at the event expressed gratitude to the State Government as well as the Local Government Civil Service Commission for organizing the training program as it opened their eyes to effective communication and enhancement and to further broaden their operational knowledge.
