Oyo State on Monday formally commenced activities to mark its 50th anniversary, celebrating five decades of creation, growth, and contributions to national development, amid the noticeable absence of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade.
The golden jubilee celebrations, which attracted top government officials, traditional rulers, political leaders, and other stakeholders from across the state, were officially flagged off with a series of commemorative events highlighting Oyo State’s historical journey, socio-economic progress, and future aspirations.
While the ceremony recorded a strong turnout of dignitaries, the absence of the Alaafin of Oyo, one of the most revered traditional rulers in Yorubaland, drew public attention. No official reason was immediately provided for the monarch’s absence as of the time of filing this report.
State officials described the anniversary as a moment of reflection on Oyo State’s rich heritage and resilience since its creation in 1976, noting that the celebration would also serve as an opportunity to chart a sustainable path for inclusive development in the years ahead.
