Just In: Okpebholo Emerges Winner of Edo Governorship Election
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, the winner of the September 21, 2024 Edo State governorship election.
Okpebholo secured victory in the highly contested off-cycle election, which featured 17 candidates vying for the top spot at Osadebe House. The election saw widespread participation across 4,519 polling units in all 18 local government areas.
Backed by former governor and current senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, Okpebholo outpaced rivals Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.
According to INEC, Okpebholo won 11 local government areas, including Esan West, Owan West, Egor, Akoko-Edo, Esan Central, Orhionmwon, Etsako East, Etsako Central, Etsako West, and Oredo. Ighodalo secured seven local government areas.
The final results were:
– APC: 291,667 votes
– PDP: 247,274 votes
– LP: 22,763 votes
With this victory, Okpebholo is set to succeed the incumbent governor of Edo State.
