House of Representatives Member, representing Ibadan South-East/North-East Federal Constituency, and Chairman of Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, Rt. Hon Abass A. Adigun (Agboworin), on Wednesday, commended the state government for its prompt intervention in the explosion incident, which occurred in Ibadan on Tuesday night, describing it as unfortunate.
The sad incident, which happened on Dejo Oyeleye Street at Adeyi Avenue, on Tuesday night, claimed the lives of several residents and destroyed properties worth millions of naira while many sustained injuries.
A press statement personally signed by him and made available to journalists in Ibadan indicated that Agboworin lauded the immediate show of empathy by the government, having deployed first responders and all relevant as well as security agencies within the state to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations on the incident.
He also appreciated the commitment of the governor to not only promising that the medical bills of all victims would be covered by the government but also to provide temporary accommodation for those whose houses were affected.
While expressing condolences to the State government over the loss of lives, he sympathized with the residents and families who have lost their loved ones and properties to the explosion disaster.
The lawmaker expressed shock at the magnitude of destruction occasioned by the explosion, which was a result of negligence from illegal miners who had stored explosive devices in their residence.
He expressed hope that such an incident would never occur in the city and the state at large again.
Agboworin said: “It is with shock and sadness that I received the news of the explosion incident, which claimed the lives of some residents and got many injured on Oyeleye Street in the Adeyi Avenue area of Ibadan.
“I am particularly impressed by the action of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, who ensured there was immediate intervention by deploying all relevant and security agencies within the state to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations as touching the incident.
“While I sympathize with the State government over this incident, which has claimed many lives, I want to equally commiserate with the residents. More so, I empathize with business owners whose structures were also affected and commiserate with families who have lost their loved ones and properties to the devastating occurrence.
“Therefore, I pray that their souls rest in peace and God gives the mourning families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
“Also, I wish the injured victims fast recuperation, and I hope that an incident like this does not occur again in this city.”
