In a surprising turn of events, a group of newly elected lawmakers in the Oyo State House of Assembly have petitioned the Speaker, alleging neglect and refusal of funds. Sources close to the matter revealed that the petition has sparked tensions within the legislative chamber.

The petition, signed by several lawmakers, mostly newcomers, accuses the House leadership of withholding funds meant for members. Additionally, they are rejecting a proposed purchase of 2021 official cars for lawmakers, insisting on the latest model of 2024.

The aggrieved lawmakers have sought Governor Seyi Makinde’s intervention, hoping he will heed their request. However, insiders hint that repercussions may follow, including removal from committees and replacement with loyalists.

According to our source, “This is not the first time such a crisis has rocked the Oyo State House of Assembly. Similar disputes in the past have led to the withdrawal of committee chairmanship and memberships”.

The source added, “The newcomers are overly zealous and expectant, thinking the House of Assembly is a money bag institution. They receive their basic allowances and salaries promptly, and some funds were disbursed for projects. So, why the excessive requests and pressure on the Speaker?”

The situation has sparked anxiety among lawmakers, fearing repercussions for their political careers. As the drama unfolds, the Oyo State House of Assembly’s political landscape is poised for a significant shift.
