To end open defecation among students, the event was held at the Ibadan Polytechnic.

Speaking to journalists at the project’s commissioning, the commissioner for environment and natural resources, Hon. Abiodun Oni, praised the project’s facilitator and donor for meeting the needs of the students, having a positive impact on their lives, and supporting the government’s efforts to end open defecation in the state.

Monumental Legacy

He urged the wealthy and affluent citizens of the state to assist the government in determining the requirements of the populace.

“This is excellent; it’s a commendable individual project.

“Ignoring the fact that he is a politician, this was a request made to him by polytechnic students, and he saw the importance of creating something of this caliber.

“We have been assured that they would ensure that the upkeep is of the utmost importance and that the consumption will be sustainable. This must be used extremely well.

In his speech, the project’s facilitator and donor, Hon. Lanre Sarumi, explained that the lack of a standard student restroom led to the construction of a standard public restroom for students to use. He also explained why the toilet and borehole were built for the students.

To gain additional support from the state’s wealthy and the government, he urged the students to make sure they use and maintain the facility appropriately.

“We don’t take on projects just because we can afford to.

“We took action that fundamentally satisfies the needs of the student body.

“The students came to us after we had reached out more than a year earlier about how to develop this project.

“I explained the situation at the time, explaining that students, particularly female students, were unable to relieve themselves while at school.

“A female student who was experiencing this for the first time reached out to us.

“They had problems with snake bites, molestation, and low self-esteem, which required us to have someone accompany female students to the jungle so they could relieve themselves. One of these problems is what led to the current situation.

In his remarks the Institution Rector, who was represented by the Dean of the Environmental Department, Mrs. Olusola Elegbede commended Hon. Lanre Sarumi for building public conveniences for the students and promised to maintain and making good use of the facility.
