Democracy Day: Hon Akintayo Pays Tribute to Chief MKO Abiola, Past Heroes, Urges Nigerians to emulate their Sacrifices

The Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Hon. Ibrahim Akintayo (Omu Yes), has called on Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes of democracy, as the nation celebrates Democracy Day today, June 12th.

The Chairman in a realease signed by the Council’s Information Officer, Ikeoye Oyetoro said “Today, we commemorate a pivotal moment in our nation’s history – Democracy Day as we honor the courage and resilience of Chief MKO Abiola.

“A true martyr of Nigerian democracy whose unwavering dedication to the June 12 mandate paved way for the freedom and democracy we enjoy today.” Akintayo said.

The Council Boss noted that Chief Abiola’s sacrifice is a reminder that democracy is not a destination, but a journey. “It requires continuous effort and dedication from all citizens. As we celebrate our democracy today, we must also acknowledge the challenges that lie ahead and must recommit ourselves to building a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive, where our diversity is celebrated, and where our collective progress is prioritized.”

Monumental Legacy

The Chairman commended the people of Ibadan North East Local Government for their commitment to democratic values, saying, “In our local government, we are dedicated to upholding the principles of democracy. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our local government is a model of democratic excellence.”

He urged Nigerians to learn from the lessons of the past, recognize the sacrifices of past heroes, and ensure that their struggles are not in vain. “We must continue to work together to ensure that every citizen has access to the dividends of democracy, including good governance, economic prosperity, and social justice.”

Hon. Akintayo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to good governance, economic development, and the welfare of citizens. “We will continue to strengthen our institutions, promote the rule of law, and protect the rights of all citizens.”

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to recommit themselves to building a better Nigeria, saying, “Let us honor the memory of Chief MKO Abiola and our past heroes by continuing to strive for a better Nigeria. Let us work together to ensure that our democracy continues to grow stronger, more resilient, and more inclusive.”
