The Executive Chairman of Egbeda Local Government, Hon. Sanda Sikiru Oyedele, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Lekan Alabi, describing his death as a monumental loss to Ibadanland, Oyo State, and the nation at large.
Hon. Oyedele stated that Chief Lekan Alabi was an accomplished media guru, an exceptional public relations practitioner, an erudite historian, and a passionate custodian of Yoruba culture whose contributions to the growth and preservation of the rich heritage of Ibadanland remain unparalleled.
According to the Chairman, the late Chief Alabi devoted his life to projecting the image of Ibadanland with dignity, preserving its history, and strengthening the revered Olubadan institution through his unwavering loyalty, wisdom, and selfless service.
“Chief Lekan Alabi was an encyclopedia of history whose wealth of knowledge on Ibadan, Yoruba culture, and Nigeria’s socio-political evolution made him a respected authority. His counsel, writings, and public engagements enriched generations and will continue to inspire those who value excellence, integrity, and cultural preservation,” Hon. Oyedele said.
The Chairman further described the deceased as a bridge-builder, mentor, and friend of the media who related with people from all walks of life without discrimination. He noted that Chief Alabi’s accessibility, humility, and willingness to nurture younger generations earned him the admiration of journalists, communication professionals, traditional institutions, and the wider public.
Hon. Oyedele lamented that the passing of the renowned historian has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill, adding that although death has silenced his voice, his enduring legacy of scholarship, patriotism, professionalism, mentorship, and cultural advocacy will remain indelible.
On behalf of the political office holders and people of Egbeda Local Government, the Chairman extended heartfelt condolences to the Olubadan Palace, the Alabi family, the people of Ibadanland, and all those mourning the revered cultural icon.
He prayed that Almighty Allah forgives the shortcomings of the deceased, grants him Al-Jannatul Firdaus, and gives his family, friends, and the entire Ibadanland the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
