Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his continuous support for judiciary, noting that the administration’s commitment to providing necessary resources and infrastructure underscores his belief in a strong and independent justice system.
The Governor, who stated this on Monday at the 2024/2025 Legal Year held at Ibadan Central Mosque, Oja’ba, Ibadan, said that the State Government has recently approved the purchase of 10 vehicles for new Judges, ensuring a full complement of judicial vehicles.
He added that there has been a substantial 300% increase in judges’ salaries and allowances, aiming to encourage greater efficiency and timeliness in judgment delivery.
Governor Makinde, who spoke through his Deputy, Barr. Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal, explained that the government in its efforts to complement the work of judges, approved the appointment of 40 State Counsel to the Ministry of Justice.
This, according to him, will enhance the Ministry’s capacity to effectively represent the State in all courts within Oyo State.
He said: “As we reflect on the strides made in the past year, let us also anticipate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
“The past year has been marked by both achievements and challenges. We have witnessed significant legal developments, legislative reforms, and judicial decisions that have shaped our nation’s legal landscape. However, we must also acknowledge the persistent challenges that hinder the effective administration of justice.
“A significant milestone in our commitment to the rule of law is the establishment of the Rule of Law Authority, headed by the Honourable Justice A.A. Aderemi (Rtd). This institution will play a pivotal role in overseeing the enforcement of laws, ensuring accountability, transparency, and fairness in the administration of justice.
“As we embark on this new legal year, let us renew our dedication to the noble profession of law and our commitment to upholding the rule of law. Let us strive for fair and impartial application of the law and ensure that justice is administered without fear or favour.
As Dr Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently stated, “The government plays a crucial role in creating and maintaining a just and equitable society. This includes ensuring that the rule of law is upheld and that the justice system operates effectively.”
“We have taken steps to implement the Supreme Court’s judgment on Local Government Autonomy, albeit with reservations. However, our respect for the Judiciary compels us to comply with the judgment.
“I urge all legal practitioners to embrace technological advancements to enhance efficiency and access to justice. Let us explore innovative solutions to address the challenges we face and ensure the legal profession remains relevant and responsive to societal needs. The State Government recognizes the heavy workload of judges and will provide necessary technological support to aid their work.
“In conclusion, let us reaffirm our commitment to building a just and equitable nation. By working together, we can overcome challenges and create a legal system that is worthy of our people.”
Earlier, the event guest lecturer, Sheikh Kamal Usamah, the Chief imam and Mudeerul Markaz Usamah Lithadib Wal- Irshad urged Muslims to follow the path of justice while specially calling on lawyers to be fair in their judgement in court.
He noted that everyone shall account for his or her deeds on the day of resurrection noting that Allah will never forget whatever anyone does in life.
He hinted that Yamomul Qiyammah is a day of judgement and urged lawyers and everyone to fear Allah.
The Islamic scholar equally urged Muslims to deviate from associating partners with Allah, noting that lawyers should be wary of those they defend during case as they will all account for their deeds on the day of resurrection.
He said: “Justice is peace. Injustice is insecurity while peace is power.”
However, in their separate remarks, the NBA Chairman, Ibadan Branch, Ibrahim Lawal and the Chairman of MULAN, Alhaji Ismaila Saka, commended the Makinde led administration for the renovations being carried out in Court rooms across the State.
They appealed to the government to make provisions of tools, equipment and gadgets that will ease the tasks of Judges, Magistrates and support Staff with provision of Computers, Stenographers and Virtual Hearing Gadgets.
They equally urged the Government to implement practical measures to ease the sufferings of people, noting that the country is passing through a very serious economic crisis with the resultant effect of acute hunger and loss of jobs.
The event was attended by top government functionaries including the commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Soliu Abdul-waheed; Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaja Joke Fausat and host of others.
