Oyo LG Chairmen Applaud Makinde for Reviving Council of Obas After 14 Years

The Forum of Oyo State Local Government Chairmen has lauded Governor Seyi Makinde for the inauguration of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, describing the development as a historic and strategic intervention aimed at repositioning traditional institutions for greater relevance and impact.

In a statement issued on Thursday and jointly signed by the Forum Chairman, Hon. Sikiru Sanda, and the Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ibrahim Akintayo, the council chairmen congratulated traditional rulers across the state on the formal reconvening of the council after a 14-year hiatus. They noted that the revival of the council would foster peace, unity, and harmonious coexistence among communities in Oyo State.

The chairmen further emphasised the importance of the council in offering advisory support to government, strengthening traditional governance structures, enhancing grassroots mobilisation and information flow, supporting security and intelligence gathering, and promoting effective conflict resolution at the community level.

Governor Makinde officially inaugurated the council at the House of Chiefs, Oyo State Secretariat, Ibadan, where the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, was installed as the pioneer Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs. In line with the rotational arrangement, the Olubadan will preside over the council for the next two years before the position rotates to another monarch.

The colourful ceremony, held at the House of Chiefs within the Oyo State House of Assembly Complex, Agodi, Ibadan, was attended by over 40 traditional rulers from across the state.

Reaffirming their commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage and traditional values, the local government chairmen pledged their full support for the governor’s initiative and assured the council of their cooperation in advancing peace, security, and sustainable grassroots development throughout Oyo State.
